Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the option to question certain rulings from the official, following the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
